Pearls of Wisdom From Mom (Top 20)

pearls in handsYesterday was the first day of school in our community and it felt very strange that I didn’t leave the house at 7:30 to take my daughter, Emily to high school.  Over the last 2 years as we made these trips back and forth to school every day, I had Emily in the car as a captive audience. During our travels, I would take the opportunity to impart my motherly “pearls of wisdom” and though I’m sure she’s relieved that she is no longer required to patiently endure my “sermonettes”,  I really missed that time with my daughter. As we took her to college a few weeks ago, I did capitalize on the marker moment to leave her with a “top twenty” list of things I wanted her to remember from those dialogues in the car. As we said our goodbyes in her dorm room, I left my parting gift on her bunk bed: a journal to chronicle her great collegiate adventure with my final tidbits of advice subtly written inside the front cover….Pearls Of Wisdom From Mom.

Hey precious girl. Just thought I’d jot down some thought-provoking morsels for you to chew on as you embark on your exciting college adventure. : ) Please remember that I’m praying for you every single day and I have every confidence that: God is the one who began this good work in you, and I am certain that He won’t stop before it is complete on the day that Christ Jesus returns. You have a special place in my heart. So it is only natural for me to feel the way I do. (Philippians 1:6-7a CEV)

Here We GO…
1. Remember how much God loves you: not because you “do” anything for Him but just because you “are” His. Think how much the Father loves us. He loves us so much that He lets us be called His children, as we truly are. (1 John 3:1 CEV)
2. Ask God to open your eyes to recognize new opportunities and rest in the fact that He has provided everything you need to accomplish His will. “Carpe Diem” or “Seize The Day!” My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need. (Philippians 4:19 NCV) I know that You (God)can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. (Job 42:2 NIV)
3. Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you. “Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” (Daniel 10:19 NLT) The Lord your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you and He will refresh your life with His love. (Zephaniah 3:17 CEV)
4. Ask God to help you see others as He sees them. God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7b NCV)
5. Many other people feel just like you and are waiting for someone to say hello to them or share a kind word. Don’t wait for them to say hello. YOU BE FIRST! You will never go wrong by extending kindness. You must be kind to each other. Think of the other person. (Ephesians 4:32 NLV)
6. Don’t be consumed with how you are “feeling”. Our “feelings” don’t always tell us the truth. But even if we don’t feel at ease, God is greater than our feelings, and He knows everything. (1 John 3:2o CEV)

7. Make yourself accountable to someone that you trust. As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. (Proverbs 27:17 NLT)
8. Step out of your “comfort zone”. If you’re having trouble taking that step, give permission to someone you trust to “push” you out. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV) Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold. (2 Corinthians 3:12 NLT)
9. Wake up every morning and even before your feet hit the floor, give the day to God, thanking Him for another day of life. This day belongs to the Lord! Let’s celebrate and be glad today. (Psalm 118:24 CEV)
10. Read the Word every day and meditate on it. Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105 NLT) I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands. I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You. Praise be to you, Lord; teach me Your decrees. (Psalm 105:10-12 NIV)
11. Let your last thought of the day be a thankful one. After you have given God all your worries and concerns, thank Him for taking care of you. My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let you be defeated. He who guards you never sleeps. (Psalm 121:2-3 NCV)
12. Don’t procrastinate! If you can get it done today, DO IT. If you’re overwhelmed with too much to do today, put it on the top of the list for tomorrow and DO IT tomorrow but don’t just sit around and talk about it. Hard work is worthwhile, but empty talk will make you poor. (Proverbs 14:23 CEV)
13. When you feel stressed out or confused, go take a short walk and pray while you’re walking. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference!” If there is nothing specific you can do right now, just do the next right thing. Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. (Isaiah 30:21 NLT)

14. Let the words that you speak be edifying to others (and yourself) and glorifying to God. Let my words and my thoughts be pleasing to You, Lord, because You are my mighty rock and my protector. (Psalm 19:14 CEV) Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29 NIV)
15. Ask lots of questions without feeling dumb and don’t assume. If you do not have wisdom, ask God for it. He is always ready to give it to you and will never say you are wrong for asking. You must have faith as you ask Him. You must not doubt. Anyone who doubts is like a wave which is pushed around by the sea. (James 1:5-6 NLT) Get the facts yourself and then ask God for wisdom. Don’t rely on someone else’s ‘take’ on the situation. Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.(Proverbs 1:5 NIV)
16. Remember God’s faithfulness to you in the past. When you doubt or feel afraid, list all the ways He has come through for you. Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies. (Psalm 36:5NIV) Then determine to trust Him as an act of your will, not your emotions. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me? (Psalm 56:4 NLT)
17. When you feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to pray, remember that God already knows what you need and the Holy Spirit is praying for you. Let us go with complete trust to the throne of God. We will receive His loving-kindness and have His loving-favor to help us whenever we need it. (Hebrews 4:16 NLV) And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. (Romans 8:26-27 NLT)
18. When you’re feeling sorry for yourself let God love on you then go do something for someone else. Don’t isolate yourself. Let us hold firmly to the hope that we have confessed, because we can trust God to do what he promised. Let us think about each other and help each other to show love and do good deeds…you should meet together and encourage each other. (Hebrews 10:23-25 NCV) I will be glad and rejoice in Your unfailing love, for You have seen my troubles, and You care about the anguish of my soul.(Psalm 31:7 NLT) He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to His heart; (Isaiah 40:11 NIV)

19. God believes in you and so do we. What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since He did not spare even His own Son but gave Him up for us all, won’t He also give us everything else? (Romans 8:31-32) I have the highest confidence in you, and I take great pride in you. (2 Corinthians 7:4 NLT)

20. Remember how much we love you and God loves you even more than we do! You have a special place in my heart. So it is only natural for me to feel the way I do. (Philippians 1:7a CEV)  I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your heart as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to Him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:16-21 NLT)
